Horsehead Nebula

This is a wide angle shot of the Horsehead nebula area The Horsehead is the best known example of a dark nebula. It lies at a distance of 1200 light years. The bright area of hydrogen (red) behind the dark mass (IC 434) is likely being illuminated by the brilliant star Alnitak to the left of the Horsehead in this mage. The Flame nebula (NGC 2024) lies below Alnitak is ionized by Alnitak and glows as a result of the electrons re-joining the ionized hydrogen. Taken with a Takahashi TOSA-150 refractor and comprised of images taken through Hydrogen Alpha (HA, red, green, and blue filters and combined in Photoshop.
