Black Forest House

I hope that after viewing this photo nobody will blame me for not showing traditional, typical Black Forest photos. Okay, here is one. Typical wooden Black Forest house located deep in forest away from civilization, easy accessible only during spring, summer or autumn on narrow natural path (with very difficult access during winter). This type of can be found mainly in the central and southern parts of the Black Forest. It is characterised externally by a long half-hipped roof (roof where all sides slope downwards to the walls) that descends almost to the height of the ground floor. This type of dwelling is suited to the conditions of the Black Forest hillside locations with high levels of snowfall and heavy wind loading. The great roof, with its long overhangs, sweeps right down to the ground floor at the sides, shading the walls of the house in summer whilst allowing the sun, now much lower in the sky, to warm the walls in winter. The roof is covered with wooden shingles (actually individual overlapping wooden tiles). Roof shingles are a very common roofing material in Black Forest, but deteriorate faster and need to repel more water than wall shingles. Do you like it?
