Rhododendrons are large evergreen shrubs with leathery leaves and big trusses of colourful flowers. However vireya Rhododendrons are quite different, both in the shape of the flower as well as origin. The delicate flowers and beautiful foliage of vireyas make them perfect for so many gardens from Cairns to Hobart, provided they are sheltered from frost. Named after the French botanist, Julien-Joseph Virey, vireyas were first introduced into Europe in the 1850s but because they did not prove very hardy in gardens, people concentrated on collecting the Himalayan rhododendrons for breeding purposes.
