Take-Off

This image of a Northern Pintail duck in flight was shot in the beautiful village, Manglajodi which is a part of Odisha, an Indian state. Manglajodi is adjacent to Chilika lake. This brackish water lake is probably the second largest lagoon in the world and the largest wintering grounds for migratory birds in the Indian subcontinent. Birds from as far as the Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, Aral Sea and other remote parts of Russia, Kirghiz steppes of Mongolia, Central and southeast Asia, Ladakh and Himalayas come here during the winter. Manglajodi was originally used by poachers as a base to hunt and later sell meat. However, a project undertaken by Indian Gramin Services changed the story. The villagers were integrated into an ecotourism project to start a small home-stay for bird fanciers and photographers. Presently photographers and tourists flock to the area. This has almost put an end to poaching, though stray incidents do occur. If you are planning a birding trip do consider Manglajodi as your next destination. The proximity of birds and low cost of traveling makes this place a brilliant option for birding and photography. In case you are planning to travel to this village, drop me a message on mohaptra.swayam@gmail.com and I will answer all your queries.(I don't organize tours, I can only give you the contacts and guide you with the travel details.)
